HOPE program (Human Organ Procurement and Exchange)

The HOPE Program is the provincial program responsible for the coordination of donation, recovery and distribution of organs for transplantation within Alberta. Independent offices of the HOPE program exist to serve the northern and southern areas of Alberta. The Southern Alberta office is located in Calgary. The Northern Alberta HOPE program is based within the Capital Health region at the University of Alberta Hospital.

Priorities of the HOPE program include:

  • coordination of the donation process;
  • advocating for those who have considered organ donation;
  • bereavement support for families of donors;
  • education on all aspects of organ donation; and,
  • participation in valuable research required to successfully advance the field of organ and tissue transplantation.

The HOPE program coordinators promote awareness of organ and tissue donation by providing informative and interactive education to health professionals and members of the public.

HOPE is part of a national and international community of donor programs and regularly interacts and collaborates with other organ procurement organizations across Canada and the United States.
