Capital Health has developed new day surgery guidelines to reduce delays in surgery, improve quality of care, reduce duplication of lab tests, and generally improve service for day surgery patients.
Summary of Guidelines
- Allow 4-5 weeks for completion of diagnostic work-up
- Consults are to be completed as soon as possible
Medical consultations (internal medicine ) should occur before PAC visit
- Consents should be signed in surgeon's office
- Surgeons are expected to sign the History & Physical form if the exam is performed by the Family physician
- All documentation ( lab test, consults, consent etc.) should arrive at the surgical facility one week prior to surgery date
- Data Base 1and 2 is to be given to patient in surgeon's office and forwarded to healthcare facility prior to surgery
- Transportation arrangements must be in place for day surgery patients
- Arrangements must be made for a responsible adult to care for day surgery patients for 24 hours post-op
- Patient must have fixed address to qualify as day surgery patient
- All documentation including the physician's orders must be sent to the facility prior to patient coming to/for the Pre-Admission Clinic and/or surgery.
