Capital Health's Transplant Services, located at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) and Stollery Children's Hospital, is one of the leading Organ and Tissue transplant programs in Canada, serving both adult and pediatric patients. Many types of transplants are done at our hospital - kidney, liver, heart, lung, islets, intestinal, human tissue (e.g. heart valve, bone), and pancreas transplantation. The UAH is also home to the Comprehensive Tissue Centre, which is responsible for retrieving, processing, storing and distributing donated tissue for transplantation (e.g. corneas, skin).
Canadian transplant patients are living longer as a result of improvements in surgical techniques and organ preservation, advances in anti-rejection drugs, and better care during hospitalization. A specialized 16-bed multi-organ transplant unit further enhances patient care at the UAH for adult patients who have had transplants.
In addition to providing patient services, the Transplant Program plays an integral role in professional and community education. Education activities range from educating community groups and medical students to long-term strategic planning and program development. The program also works collaboratively with organ and tissue donation programs in Edmonton and Calgary to support organ and tissue donation throughout Western Canada.
A variety of health care professionals are a part of the transplant teams at the University of Alberta Hospital and Stollery Children's Hospital. Doctors, nurses, dietitians, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, pastoral care workers, administrative support and other professionals all play an important role in our program.
