Edmonton's Playgrounds
January 9th – March 21st, 2010
The Edmonton Art Club is the oldest continually existing art organization in Alberta. In 1914, an association of art educators and artists formed a group called the Edmonton Art Association. In 1921, 14 of these people who were artists formed the Edmonton Art Club. Its first meeting was held on October 6, 1921, nearly 89 years ago. Thus began the tradition of attracting promising artists to the group, their admission by a jury of members, regular monthly meetings with professional criticism of members' artwork, and annual or more frequent exhibitions. This mandate continues. The EAC is always searching for exhibition venues accessible to the public and offering a secure environment.
The EAC membership is delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit in the McMullen Gallery not only because it is a fine venue, but also because the show might give pleasure to patients, staff and visitors at the University of Alberta Hospital.
Producing artworks on a theme was something new and rather a challenge to the club members. Members submitted ideas and settled on the theme of "Edmonton's Playgrounds". The description of the theme is: not necessarily a children's playground, but an area in or around Edmonton where people might go to enjoy a family outing and have a fun time. Edmonton has a large number of such places, from the river valley trails and parks to any number of the annual festivals and events such as Capital Ex, Heritage Days, visiting Fort Edmonton, or Storyland Valley Zoo; even the wading pool in the Legislature grounds or Snow Valley ski area could be considered one of Edmonton's Playgrounds.
The members of the EAC want to illustrate the interesting variety of enjoyable places and activities Edmonton has to offer, and to provide cheerful and colorful, or calm and restful artwork. The McMullen Gallery is an island of respite from the hustle of the hospital, and we wish to enhance the enjoyment of those who visit.
