Specialized service for children and adolescents with chronic pain
We are committed to meeting the needs of children with chronic pain and their families in an environmental that integrates excellence in the delivery of care, education and research
About Us
The Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic includes a physician specializing in pain, a pediatric nurse practitioner, a psychologist and a physical therapist.
The goal of this service is to treat and care for children 17 years and under who are experiencing chronic, difficult-to-manage pain.
Treatments
The Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic uses a model of care that looks to understanding the patient's individual experience as an essential contributor to accurate diagnosis and best treatment plans. This approach is called the biopsychosocial model of care. A key part of our program involves educating children and their families about chronic pain.
The specific treatment plan will depend on the results of the comprehensive assessment.
Treatment for chronic pain may include the use of medications, physical therapy, psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy, guide imagery and relaxation, and discussion of possible treatment alternatives or complementary therapies such as yoga, acupuncture or massage therapy.
The Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic team also offers emotional support and follow-up care to children and families.
Preparing For Your Visit
Once a child has been referred to the Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic, the Nurse Practitioner will contact the parents and referring physician to obtain the necessary background information prior to the initial appointment.
During Your Visit
The initial, consultation appointment will take approximately one-two hours. During this time, the Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic team members will meet with the child and family to complete an assessment and physical examination of the child, establish or confirm the diagnosis and develop an individualized treatment plan.
The team will provide the child and family with:
- an understanding of the pain diagnosis and factors that contribute to the child's pain and disability;
- a discussion of available treatment options;
a plan of care with goals and evaluation plans; and - further appointments with team members.
After the appointment, the Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic team members will follow up with the referring physician to communicate the treatment plans and coordinate care for the child.
