Q: How was the name of the Hospital selected?
A: Capital Health, together with the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, agreed to name the region’s new hospital dedicated to women’s health in honor of the late Dr. Lois E. Hole, former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. This honor allows us to recognize and celebrate the outstanding woman that Lois Hole was and to mark her significant contributions to bettering life for all Albertans.
Q. What kind of services will the Lois Hole Hospital for Women provide?
A: The Lois Hole Hospital for Women will provide the same services that are currently provided through the Women’s Health program at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. This includes both obstetrical and gynecology services as well as a host of other programs and services to ensure that we can care for women at all ages and stages in their lives. However, several other new clinics are also being considered for the new building. One new service that is expected to be available in the spring of 2008 is in vitro fertilization services.
Q: Who will the Lois Hole Hospital for Women care for?
A: Capital Health cares for more than one million residents in the region, in addition we also serve a large referral area that includes northern and central Alberta and Canada’s North.
Q: Why do we need a dedicated women’s hospital?
A: Women have unique health issues and this new hospital will allow us to better meet those needs and to offer leading edge care to wives, mothers, grandmothers, daughters and all the other women in our lives. This facility will also help us retain and recruit the best clinicians and researchers to ensure that women in this region have access to outstanding care based on the latest teaching and research.
Q: Where will the hospital be located?
A: The Lois Hole Hospital for Women will be the second facility in the Capital Health region that adopts the “hospital within a hospital” model. This means that the Lois Hole Hospital will function as its own hospital but will operate within the larger Royal Alexandra Hospital.
The Lois Hole Hospital for Women will physically be located within the Robbins Pavilion, a large 19,600 square metre building that is currently under construction on the north side of the Royal Alexandra Hospital on the 111th Avenue side. In addition, there are several other clinics that are part of the Lois Hole Hospital for Women that are located in the Community Services Centre building is adjacent to the new building.
Q: Given the current shortage of health professionals how will you staff the Lois Hole Hospital for Women?
A: When the Lois Hole Hospital for Women opens our current team of staff and physicians working in the Women’s Centre at the Royal Alexandra Hospital will move into the new building and continue to provide the outstanding care that we are known for. In addition, we are always looking to recruit talented individuals working in the field of Women’s Health.
