About Us

Model of the Lois Hole Hospital for Women The new Lois Hole Hospital for Women, when it opens in 2009, will be unlike any other facility in the Capital Health region, and probably in the province. Capital Health's goal is to create a hospital where, when women walk through the doors they'll know they are entering a special place – a place designed just for them where they can get the specialized care and treatment that they need.

The new women's hospital will be a "hospital within a hospital," similar to the concept used for the Stollery Children's Hospital. It will be located in the North Treatment Centre, a new six-story tower that will be constructed on the Royal Alexandra Hospital site. Site preparation is already underway and construction of the building will begin in 2005.

Administration offices and Teaching/Research space for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, will also be included in the hospital.

Construction of the 128-bed Hospital will begin in the summer of 2005 with the opening scheduled for the spring of 2009. The new facility will be a "hospital within a hospital" and will occupy four levels of a new six-story building to be built on the Royal Alexandra Hospital campus. The model for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women will be similar to that used for the Stollery Children's Hospital, which is located within the University of Alberta Hospital.

The Lois Hole Hospital for Women will strengthen the focus on Women's Health's programming in the Capital Health region and will also allow us to consolidate the majority of Women's Health programs and services currently based on the Royal Alexandra Hospital campus into the new building. Services are provided to women throughout the region, with specialized services being provided to women from northern and central Alberta and Canada's northwest.

Currently Capital Health provides a continuum of care for women from all walks of life, from the start of life with approximately 4500 babies being born at the hospital each year right through to specialized services for women in their later years. On one hand we offer those women who are most disadvantaged – including those facing poverty and language barriers in our immediate community – with access to services that meet their unique needs.  At the same time the Royal Alexandra Hospital is a recognized centre of excellence for high-risk obstetrics for women in Western Canada, as well as offering specialized services including oncology, urogynecology and infertility treatments.

The new Lois Hole Hospital for Women will ensure we can continue to meet growing demands for women's health services by providing new and expanded space, access to new technology and supporting increased research, education and innovation. This will ultimately lead to improved patient outcomes and to the region being better able to meet the needs of patients.

In addition, Capital Health is a lead provider of specialized health services for central and northern Alberta and Canada's northwest. This new hospital will incorporate the infrastructure and technology, such as Telehealth, so that we can better support northern health professionals, resulting in women from outlying regions receiving care closer to home, family and friends.

The Lois Hole Hospital for Women will also improve the focus in the region on Women's Health and help us recruit and retain leading experts in this field. The Royal Alexandra Hospital is proud of its affiliation with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. As a teaching centre, this new hospital will support our physicians and staff in expanding the innovative research and learning that is already underway and also strengthen opportunities for training obstetricians and gynecologists, again helping to identify new and better ways of treating women.
