  • Angiography
    Angiography is an exam that uses an injection of radiopague contrast through a catheter insertion into blood vessels to make blood vessels visible on X-rays.
  • Asthma Education, Adult
    Registered Respiratory Therapists, who are Certified Asthma Educators (CAE) and/or Certified Respiratory Educators (CRE), speak with patients (and/or their families) to help assess, diagnose, treat and provide education.
  • Asthma Pediatric Clinic/Education
    This clinic accepts patients referred for assessment of asthma or suspected asthma.
  • Audiology Service (Community) - Children & Adults
    Audiology Services (Community) offers standard hearing assessments and follow-up for individuals six months of age and older, and provides auditory processing assessments for individuals seven years of age and older.
  • Blood Gas Analysis/Co-oximetry
    Provides arterial blood gas punctures and analysis on outpatients.
  • Breastfeeding Clinic
    BY REFERRAL ONLY from Physicians or Community Health Services Nurses. Provides breastfeeding support for women experiencing major problems with establishing or maintaining lactation.

    Provides inpatient and outpatient bronchoscopy procedures.
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
    Provides education about heart disease and how to manage it.
  • Cast Clinic
    Provides care and treatment for orthopaedic (bone/joint) problems.
  • Child Health Clinic Grey Nuns
    Provides support for asthma, neurodevelopmental/behavioural, breastfeeding and general clinics.
  • Community Nutrition
    Services include teaching, presenting, and answering questions about how to eat well.
  • Computed Tomography
    Computed Tomography takes images or slices of the body using radiation and computer enhanced imaging.
  • Coronary Care Inpatient Unit
    Provides inpatient care for patients with acute events of adult heart disease.
  • Critical Care/Intensive Care Services
    Provides care for patients with a life-threatening diseases that involves several major organ transplants.
  • Cystoscopy
    Provides examination of the Urinary Tract.
  • Day Surgery Services
    Provide Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgery such as tonsils, myringotomy, adenoidectomy, cholecystectomies, hernia repairs, minor gyne procedures, vascular access and orthopedic procedures. All surgical procedures on Day Surgery are expected to be able to be discharged the same day as the surgery.
  • Ears Nose and Throat Surgery/ (Day Surgery)
    Most ENT surgery is done as day surgery including SMR's (submucosal resections or nasal surgery), removal of nasal polyps, myringotomies (insertion of tubes in the ears for children), removal of tonsils and adenoids. We also have inpatient beds e.g. for uncontrolled nosebleeds, severe ear infection. However, the majority of our ENT procedures are done as Day Surgery and discharged the same day.

  • Electroencephalogram
    To effectively assess and diagnose the extent and effect of neuromuscular disorders, including those affecting muscles, nerves, neuromuscular junctions and the spinal cord.
  • Emergency Departments
    The Emergency Department responds to the needs of our community by providing all aspects of acute emergency services, including the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of emergency health problems, with interventions ranging from minimal to intensive life threatening measures.
  • Endoscopy
    Provides diagnostic scoping services for gastro intestinal complaints.
  • Evoked Potential
    Completes tests in order to assess problems in nerve fibres. These tests are used to check if patients currently have or may have had diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis.
  • Fluoroscopy
    Fluoroscopy is a type of exam that utilizes short bursts of X-Rays to create a video display that can be stored as static images or a video loop.
  • General Radiology
    General Radiography provides static imaging of the entire body including Chest, Abdomen, Spine, and extremities, but now in digital form.
  • General Surgery
    General surgery includes unit 41 and 42. Provide pre and post-operative care for the following surgeries: bowel (including laproscopic bowel surgery), breast, thyroid, gallbladder, hernia, haemorrhoids, and appendectomy.
  • Geriatric Health Services Inpatient Services
    Geriatric Health Services provides both consultative services and inpatient care services within the Grey Nuns Community Hospital.
  • Geriatric Health Services Outpatient Services
    Comprehensive assessment of older adult health, wellness and wellbeing by an interdisciplinary team that is specialized in the care of older adults.
  • Grey Nuns Rehab Outreach Services
    Wellness programs for adults of the general public or hospital staff; includes gentle group exercise in the gym or the warm pool to counteract chronic pain or debilitation. Offers Tai Chi Chih, Yoga, Water Wellness, Get Up and Go (for Seniors), Walking to Wellness (for Seniors) and Fitness Improvement Training classes (for those with high blood pressure, overweight , diabetes). Massage Therapy also available.

  • Hemodialysis - Northern Alberta Renal Program (NARP)
    This service provides hemodialysis treatments to patients who are under the care of a Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist).

    Provides holter monitoring to patients with abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Home Parenteral Therapy
    Provides patients with antimicrobial intravenous therapy for longer than 72 hours at home.

    Patient Information Desk responsibilities include direction of patients and visitors both in person and by telephone.

  • Intermediate Care Nursery
    Provides care for neonates delivered after 32 weeks gestation who require extra medical care.
  • Intravenous (IV) Clinic
    Provide intravenous antimicrobial therapy in an outpatient setting for patients with a variety of medical and surgical conditions requiring therapy for less than 72 hours. Patients would come to the clinic 2 to 3 times per day for therapy.
  • Invest in Your Bones - Osteoporosis Education Sessions
    Three hour education sessions designed for men and women with osteoporosis/osteopenia. Space is limited. Pre-registration required. No charge. Call for list of upcoming dates. Telephone consultations and information packages also available.
  • Labour and Delivery
    Provides antepartum (before labour), intrapartum (during labour) and immediate postpartum (after the delivery) care to patient greater than 20 weeks pregnant.
  • Labs in the Community
    Dynalife (location information and booking can be done via telephone or on-line, see web address in record). Outpatient hospital labs will also complete community blood work.
  • Lipid Clinic
    Provides assessment and treatment for patients with high lipid levels (cholesterol, trigylcerides).
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
    Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses powerful magnetic fields and radiofrequency coils to produce high quality cross sectional images of the body without any radiation. Types of exams performed include neurological studies, orthopedics, pediatrics and a limited number of abdominal and cardiac studies.
  • Multicultural Health
    Provides services to families from various cultural backgrounds and ethnic heritages.
  • Nuclear Medicine
    Patients are administered radiotracers (by injection, ingestion or inhalation) that localize in specific organs in the body. The localization of these tracers enables these organs to be imaged by gamma cameras with the data analyzed and stored on computers for functional information through analysis.
  • Nutrition Counselling - Adult (General)
    In this service, a Registered Dietitian provides teaching to help clients follow a special diet and improve their eating pattern to manage their medical condition. The majority of teaching is one-to-one, however, group sessions may be available (e.g. heart health, weight management).
  • Obstetrical Assessment Clinic
    Provides outpatient assessment of pregnant patients over 20 weeks gestation.
  • Obstetrical/Gynecology Clinics
    Provide appointments with an obstetrician/gynecologist for a variety of health issues including pregnancy and gynecological problems.
  • Occupational Therapy, Mental Health/Psychiatry Program - OT
    This service provides training, education and support needed to achieve a maximal level of independence in all aspects of daily living.
  • Orthopedics - Inpatient and Day Surgery
    Provides short stay inpatient orthopedic surgeries.
  • Osteoporosis Exercise Program
    This is an educational and exercise program for people with osteopenia or osteoporosis.

    Provides evaluation and ongoing follow up of patients with implanted pacemakers.

    Provides meals and snacks to inpatients and outpatients in the hospital.

    Patient Relations is available to support relationships between the care team and the patients, clients, and families that access Alberta Health Services - Edmonton area programs and services.
  • Pediatric Developmental and Mental Health Clinics
    Provides in-depth assessments of children with developmental, learning or behavioral problems.
  • Physical Therapy Clinics in the Community
    Through a variety of hands-on treatments, education and exercise prescription, a physical therapist will help you maximize your ability to function in your daily life. Physical therapy aims to reduce pain, increase strength and flexibility and help you manage the physical demands of living independently.
  • Postpartum Health for Moms Exercise Class
    An 8 week class, to provide new mothers with the education necessary to restore the strength and stability of your low back and pelvis after having your baby.

    Provides services to women pre-natally and postpartum.
  • Pre Assessment Clinic
    Provides teaching for patients in preparation for their surgery.
  • Prenatal Services Grey Nuns
    Provides an educational program for parents and/or family supports to provide them with information which may help them cope with labour, delivery and the immediate postpartum period.

    Provides support and a bridge between the hospital and the community for individuals experiencing a treatment resistant mental illness.

    This service provides assessment, consultation, treatment, and follow up for a variety of anxiety, mood, and psychotic disorders.
  • Psychiatric Outpatient Program
    Offers a psychodynamic 12 week day or evening therapy program, focusing on insights gained through structured group therapy.
  • Psychiatric Partial Hospitalization Program
    Provides services geared to meet the needs of discharged inpatients, who are recovering from an acute psychiatric illness but are not yet ready to function independently.

    This service provides assessment, diagnosing, and treatment a full range of psychiatric and/or medically related emotional, behavioural, cognitive, and interpersonal problems.
  • Pulmonary Clinic
    Provides assessment and treatment for a variety of respiratory conditions.
  • Pulmonary Functions
    Registered Respiratory Therapists perform a variety of breathing tests on inpatients and outpatients to assist doctors in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a patient's lung function. Asthma education can be booked in one to one sessions, directed by Certified Asthma Educators (CAE). Respiratory medications and other respiratory diseases can also be covered.
  • Regional Palliative Care Program
    Palliative Care aims to relieve symptoms and improve the quality of living and dying for an individual and/or family living with a life threatening illness. Regional Palliative Care is a community-based program of care offering services for persons throughout the region. The main components of the program are Palliative Home Care, hospices, tertiary units and consultation services in acute care and the community.
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
    Provides restoration, maintenance, and/or improvements of functional activity for clients.
  • Renal Insufficiency Clinic - Northern Alberta Renal Program (NARP)
    The Renal Insufficiency Clinic provides a team approach to kidney care for individuals with kidney damage. Care is focused on keeping the kidneys as healthy as possible.
  • Respiratory Therapy
    This service provides diagnosis, treatment and education for inpatients, and for patients with various respiratory disorders or conditions.
  • Retail Food Services
    Regional Nutrition and Food Service, Retail Food Services provides catering services for meetings, seminars or conferences.
  • Senior's Balance and Conditioning Program
    This is an exercise class specifically for seniors who live at home, whose mobility is limited and are at risk of falling.
  • Social Work
    Provides the services of a Social Worker to inpatients and outpatients, their families, and significant others.

    Provides psychosocial assessments, individual counselling group therapy,discharge and follow up planning to inpatients and outpatients in the Mental Health Program.

    Provides assessment and treatment of the profoundly ill, suicidal, aggressive, and psychotic patient occurs in a secure environment.
  • Speech-Language Pathology
    Speech Language Pathology provides identification, diagnosis and treatment of adults and children with communication disorders. Also offers feeding/swallowing services for adults only.
  • Spiritual Care
    Spiritual Care services provide spiritual and emotional support for patients, families and staff.
  • Stress Testing
    Provides special tests to check how well a clients heart works under increased physical stress.
  • Stroke Clinic
    The stroke clinic is a secondary stroke prevention clinic offering services to those patients who have had stroke or TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack or ¿Mini Stroke¿).
  • Surgery Clinics
    Provides a variety of assessment, treatment and procedures to sugery outpatients.
  • TeleStroke
    TeleStroke services connect a stroke neurologist with patients who are at risk for a stroke or a secondary stroke.
  • Tertiary Palliative Care Unit
    This unit, located at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital, is for palliative patients with very difficult symptoms and complicated problems requiring intensive care and support. When symptoms improve, patients may be discharged home or to the most appropriate care setting. Admission requires a physician referral and assessment by a member of the palliative care team.
  • Ultrasound
    Ultrasound exams use high frequency sound waves to produce images. Interventional procedures are also performed such as biopsies, drainages, etc. This service provides both static and dynamic imaging. Types of exams performed include obstetrical, cardiac, abdominal, pelvic, vascular, neuro-ultrasound and trans-esophageal echocardiography.
  • Vascular Imaging Services
    Vascular Imaging Services provides vascular artery and vein anatomy imaging by using radiopague contrast material to make blood vessels visible on x-rays.
  • Vascular Surgery (Inpatient/ Day Surgery)
    Grey Nuns Community Hospital is the regional center for vascular surgery programs for Capital Health Region and Northern Alberta, the Territories and Northern BC.
  • Walking to Wellness Exercise Class
    For the mobile senior looking for a general exercise class, these classes incorporate a variety of exercises to improve and maintain strength and mobility.
  • Women's Wellness Program - Menopause and Osteoporosis Clinics
    Provides information about menopause and osteoporosis, breast health, heart health and other topics of interest to women over the age of 35. Osteoporosis clinic also offers services to men. Other services offered included spring and fall lecture series, annual Prime Time for Women's conference, biannual newsletter, workplace wellness initiatives, and telephone referal service.
  • Wound Care
    Provides inpatient consult service on wound management.
