Located at the Alberta Hospital Edmonton site, Turningpoint provides inpatient assessment and treatment services to adolescents who are
- 12 years of age or older
- in conflict with the law
- legally mandated for assessment and treatment services
- who require assessment and treatment for mental health or behavior problems.

Turningpoint accepts referrals from throughout the province and occasionally from the northern territories on a case by case basis. The unit accommodates both remand assessments (ordered by the courts under the Youth Criminal Justice Act) and treatment programs for youth in custodial care.

A multimodal, cognitive-behavioral approach is used to address the multiple deficits that often place these individuals at increased risk for re-offending, focussing on their mental illness and/or behavioral difficulties. Family involvement is encouraged and integrated into the treatment program. An academic program is offered through the Edmonton Public School Division and patients are encouraged to pursue educational endeavors. Admissions for treatment are typically voluntary and youth are accepted during the latter portion of their sentence, ideally from 8 to 10 months.
