About Us

Alberta Hospital Edmonton provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment, consultation, education and conducts research. Admission and continuing treatment at the hospital can be:

  • Voluntary
  • Formal under the Mental Health Act
  • Mandated to the Northern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Program under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Physicians, mental health professionals, health care facilities, community agencies and family can also refer people for treatment

Alberta Hospital Edmonton services

The three programs offered at Alberta Hospital Edmonton are:

  • The Adult Psychiatry Program
  • The Geriatric Psychiatry Program
  • The Northern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Program

Each of these programs has an inpatient and a community component lead by interdisciplinary teams including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, physiotherapists, pharmacists and dieticians.

Adult Psychiatry Program

The Adult Psychiatry Program has 194 beds and serves adults between the ages of 18 and 65 with a severe or persistent mental illness. Treatment is provided through both inpatient services and community services.

Inpatient services include:

  • General acute assessment and treatment
  • Intense, crisis oriented services in an intensive psychiatric care unit
  • Rehabilitative care in four sub-program units: psychiatric rehabilitation, Specialized Treatment Assessment and Reintegration Services (STARS), continuous care and behavioral assessment and treatment
  • Vocational and social programs

Geriatric Psychiatry Program

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program has 106 beds and serves patients who have a severe or persistent mental illness and are over the age of 65.

The inpatient service provides interdisciplinary assessment, treatment and rehabilitation in a secure environment, as well as discharge planning.

The Community Geriatric Program provides follow-up and ongoing care to patients in the areas of in-home assessment and treatment, outpatient clinics, day program, education as well as liaising and providing referrals to other community agencies.

Northern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Services

The Northern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Services has 110 beds in a secure hospital setting and provides expert and specialized assessment, treatment, consultation, education and research activities for or related to adults and adolescents with mental health or behavior problems who are in conflict with the law.

Alberta Hospital Edmonton provides inpatient forensic services that include acute assessment and treatment (including court-ordered assessments), forensic rehabilitation, a program for sex offenders (Phoenix Program) and a program for young offenders (Turningpoint Program).

In the community, the hospital provides comprehensive services through Forensic Assessment and Treatment Services (FACS). These services include:

  • Clinic-based and outreach court ordered assessment
  •  Individual, couple and group therapy
  • Multiphase violence and sexual offender programs
  • Crisis services specific to the forensic population
  • Day program
  • Pharmacotherapy and medication clinics
  • Jail and residential psychiatric clinics and liaison
  • Young offender residential treatment
  • Direct and indirect services to northern regional centers
  • Consultation to criminal justice, health and community agency staff
  • Education to students and community partners

General Information

Alberta Hospital Edmonton provides pastoral and spiritual care and counseling. The hospital ensures that religious rites and programs are available to enhance spiritual resources for life transitions, rehabilitation and healing.

Patients at Alberta Hospital Edmonton are able to participate in the Patients' Council concerning issues that impact their life at the hospital.

Clients, patients and those acting on their behalf with questions or concerns regarding their treatment or care can receive assistance from the Client/Patient Representative Service.

Illicit drugs and alcohol are not permitted within the hospital premises.

Capital Health provides inpatient/outpatient programs at four acute care hospitals, a rehabilitation hospital, an extensive network of community clinics, a specialized psychiatric hospital (Alberta Hospital Edmonton), and a variety of contracted community services.
