On May 1, 2008, Capital Health celebrated the official opening of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. The 600,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility is Canada's newest heart institute, and the first of its kind in Western Canada.
The heart institute will be a centre for the most complex heart care and surgery for patients from the Edmonton area, northern and central Alberta, the Prairies, and as far away as the Northwest Territories and Yukon. It will also be one few institutes in the world to provide cardiac care to both adult and pediatric patients under the same roof.
The 132-bed facility will coalesce cardiac care with innovation, research, and education. And, as a major research centre and training ground for the heart specialists of the future, the heart institute will put Edmonton on the map as a cardiac centre of excellence.
