Surgical Suite

Pediatric and adult cardiac patients receive life-saving advanced treatment that is supported by a surgical suite with state-of-the-art imaging and communication systems

SurgeonsThe Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute's Surgical Suite will consist of six operating rooms (OR) – one of which will be a hybrid OR -- that will provide services to adult and pediatric patients who require cardiovascular surgery, as well as heart and/or lung transplantation.

Six adult and two pediatric cardiac surgeons perform a full range of cardiovascular surgical procedures, such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacements, ascending and thorco-abdominal aneurysm resections, as well pacemaker and defibrillator implants and laser lead extractions. Berlin Heart and Thoratec ventricular assist device procedures are also performed for our pediatric and adult population.

The digital ORs have moveable booms/arms that are suspended from the ceiling, rather than from the walls or on carts as in traditional surgical suites. This reduces the number of equipment carts and electrical cords around the surgical team, while making equipment readily accessible and safer.

Surgeons have immediate access through Alberta Netcare and PACS, to relevant patient information while they operate. The digital ORs also have the capability to capture and broadcast real-time images of surgeries for use in clinical teaching and consultation, as procedures are being done.

Staffing in the surgical suite includes a patient care manager, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses/operating room technicians, service workers, unit clerks, and a clinical nurse educator. Our team approach to intraoperative care includes a close network of anesthetists, anesthetic technicians, perfusionists, surgical residents and students, as well as researchers.

The surgical suite is staffed with support from the University of Alberta Hospital Level Three Surgical Suite.

Location
The existing Surgical Suite at the University of Alberta Hospital is located on level three in the 3B pod. Please see the Level 3 map for more information. The Surgical Suite in the Mazankowski Albert Heart Institute will also be located on level three. Both surgical suites will be connected by a walkway for easy access.

Parking
