What is Telehealth?
Telehealth is the use of information and communications technology to deliver health services, expertise and information to residents and health teams in Central and Northern Alberta, within Capital Region and beyond to other provinces/territories.
Telehealth enables patient clinical consultations, professional education, patient visits and administrative meetings by overcoming barriers such as geography, transportation infrastructure and socio-economic disparity.
Images and applications are transmitted digitally using videoconferencing, hand-held devices, digital imaging technologies, the Internet, SuperNet, and a variety of other emerging technologies.
Telehealth services are the responsibility of Regional Telehealth within Capital Health. Regional Telehealth contributes to Capital Health's reputation as a global leader in health by providing education, research and evaluation to patients, caregivers, clinicians, physicians and staff.
As well, Regional Telehealth is used to facilitate efficient, integrated and coordinated health services in the region and beyond. Telehealth is used for administrative functions including interviews for staff recruitment, meetings and conferences.
Our department also works with other regions, health providers and the public to develop processes for integrating Telehealth in service delivery.
