These non-electronic (not computer based) resources are for teachers to support Health and Physical Education Curriculums K-12.

BODY IMAGE

Liking the Me I See in the Mirror - Program
The program contains lesson plans for Kindergarten–Grade 9 and a parent manual.  This is appropriate for both physical and health education curriculum with interactive student activities and handouts, are attempts at helping individuals improve their body image. 

Expecting Respect Peer Education (ER) - Program
This program targets junior and senior high school students. 
Peer education – students educating students with student-led classroom presentations
that affect attitudes, dispel myths and provide, up-to-date information about youth issues.
Topics fit many of the outcomes of the Health and Life Skills Curriculum. 
Topics in junior high include:

  • healthy relationships
  • bullying
  • media awareness
  • tobacco
  • drugs, alcohol, gambling

Body Image Resource Collection – Education Kit
(Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6, Grades 7-9 and Grades 10-12)
This kit includes activities, lesson plans, background information and transparencies to address themes such as influence on body image, bullying, discrimination based on appearance and media awareness. 

HEALTHY EATING

The Kids Nutrition Tour – Program
The program, provided by a registered dietitian for Kindergarten-Grade 12, is designed to meet the health curriculum of Alberta Education and available free of charge at all Save-On Foods locations. 

HYGIENE

Glo-germ – Education Kit
This kit contains a glo-germ solution, UV light and instructions to support hand washing lessons in the classroom setting. 

Healthy Habits for Healthy Happy Kids - Education Kit
This kit includes children's book, resource booklet (with songs and activities), resource sheets, posters and a puppet to assist in teaching basic hygiene.

Just Wash 'Em - Education Kit
This kit includes 'Sudsy' hand washing video, teaching activities and lesson plans.

MENTAL HEALTH

Teasing and Bullying: Unacceptable Behaviour  - Education Kit
This kit focuses on the problem of bullying and includes a video and print resources to support an in class discussion.

Feel Good Boxes – Education Kit
This kit helps children distinguish between outside events (stressful events or pressures) and inside coping skills (strength, resilience, hope and problem-solving skills).

SEXUALITY

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Teaching Outline and Resource Guide – Print Resource
A teaching guide that includes overheads and ideas for games and student learning activities.

Talking About Sexuality with Your Child - Print Resource
This resource enables professionals to help parents to communicate about sexuality with their children through parent education sessions. 

Abstinence Pick and Choose Activities Book – Print Resource 
The resource is designed to provide teachers with classroom activities that they can use to promote sexual abstinence as a viable option for teens. 

Growing Up OK – Print Resource
The booklet is intended for children aged 10 and 11 years that provides general information about puberty.

Youth Help Card – Print Resource
A card listing a variety of region- wide agencies that provide support and information to teens. Covers topics about sexuality, pregnancy, physical abuse and crisis situations.  (500/ package)

Parent Help Card – Print Resource
Business size card providing parents phone numbers and agency contact for troubled teens.

Growing Up for Girls (Grades 5 and 6) and
Growing Up for Boys (Grades 5 and 6) – Videos
Two videos (one for girls and one for boys) that promote self-confidence as girls and boys face the challenges of change and growth.

Just Around the Corner for Girls (Grade 4) and
Just Around the Corner for Boys (Grade 4) - Video
Two videos (one for girls and one for boys) that address the physical and emotional changes of puberty.

We're Growing Up (Grades 6 and 7) - Video
The video is designed for a combined audience of boys and girls that covers growth patterns from fetal growth through childhood and into adolescence.  It presents a view of male and female anatomy and sexual development with an emphasis on responsible choices. 

Teen Sex, Reality Strikes Back (Grades 8-12) - Video
A video that discusses teen sex, STDs and cybersex.  It includes four different lifestyle choices and risks associated with choices.

Trust and Honesty (Grades 8-12) - Video
The video includes healthy relationship skills and managing break-ups in a healthy way.

TOBACCO

Kick the Nic – Program
Includes a facilitator guide and training and print resources for participants, targets youth aged 13-17.

Tobacco Focus Learning Module – Print Resource
A student assignment booklet focusing on smoking for use with the Alberta Leaning Module Community Health 2010 "Adolescent Health Issues" (Career & Technical Studies).

Contents of Tobacco – Education Kit
A large cigarette model containing models of some of the 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke.  Helps parents and students learn why cigarette smoke is toxic

Smoker's Lungs - Education Kit
A set of pig's lungs, closely resemble human lungs, comparing the lungs of a non-smoker to those of a long term smoker.  They can be inflated to demonstrate the effects of smoking.  The model require special care in handling. 

Spit Tobacco Display - Education Kit
A table top display that provides information about spit tobacco including the contents, effects of spit tobacco use and reasons to be spit tobacco-free. 

Mr. Gross Mouth - Education Kit
A model of the mouth demonstrates the effects of spit tobacco use and smoking. 

Barb Tarbox, A Life Cut Short by Smoking – Video (16 min)
Barb shares her poignant story detailing her battle with lung cancer and encouraging youth to remain smoke-free or to quit smoking. 

Spit Tobacco Use in Alberta: Dispelling the Myths - Video (11 min.)
Shows chemicals in tobacco and effects of spit tobacco use.

Smoking: Truth or Dare - Video (29 min.) – Gr. 7-12
Graphically shows teens the effects of smoking on the body.

Tobacco Trivia - Game
A jeopardy-style game that tests knowledge about tobacco.

Don't Get Hooked - Game
A game for Kindergarten and Grade one students that includes catching a paper fish and answering a tobacco-related question.
