Capital Health's Community Rehabilitation Program has developed a new teacher/student resource call OT On-Hand.
OT On-Hand has been designed to help school staff to identify and understand students with occupational therapy needs including fine and gross motor skills, attention and focus, organization, and activities of daily living. The resource, a set of seven kits each targeting a specific skill, includes strategies, activities and modifications for classroom use to strengthen fine motor skills.
Each kit has a set of laminated cards outlining activities and instructions particular to an aspect of fine motor development, and includes a teacher resource manual:
- Snip & Cut
- Strength
- Pencil Grasp
- Pencil Control
- Printing
- Rainbow Printing
- Get Ready to Write!
These activities are beneficial to all students from kindergarten to grade three, in particular for those with mild to moderate fine motor difficulties. Activities can be modified to meet grade requirements, and the kits can be used with individual children or in small groups of two to four students. Activities can be lead by teachers, assistants or volunteers.
