Welcome to Alberta Health Services - Edmonton Area's Safe ATV website.
Every year in Alberta, kids are killed riding all terrain vehicles (ATVs). Hundreds more are injured. ATV related incidents are also one of the top causes of serious injuries to children and teens resulting from sport and recreational activities.
In 2006, there were 22 deaths in Alberta related to ATVs. Of those deaths, six were under the age of 19.
Dr. Bill Sevcik, Kidsafe Alberta spokesperson and Emergency Physician at the Stollery Children's and University of Alberta Hospitals, stresses that "the vast majority of ATV related injuries and deaths in the last 5 years have been and continue to be completely preventable tragedies."
The reality is that children and teens under 16 years of age do not have the strength, skills or judgement to operate an ATV.
Following the success of the 2008 'Too Young to Drive … Too Young to Ride' campaign, Kidsafe Alberta is continuing their efforts to raise awareness of the public in regards to the risks associated with ATV use.
