Keys to Success:

  • identify the correct kit for the student
  • be familiar with the purpose and instructions
  • gather the necessary materials in advance
  • keep activity sessions between five to 15 minutes
  • offer choices to students, where possible
  • adapt activities to student needs and interests, and classroom routine

The kits were designed to support curriculum programming spanning kindergarten to grade three. Activities can be modified to meet specific grade requirements. Each kit has a set of laminated cards that outlines activities and instructions specific to an aspect of fine motor development. Teacher cards in each kit provide background information as well as instructions for a number of activities. Activity cards that students will use are included in the kit.

Why Use OT On-Hand Kits? Along with providing activities to do in the classroom to build a student's fine motor skills, the kits support strategies provided by OTs who see students in your school.

Who Can Use OT On-Hand Kits?
The activities will benefit all students in kindergarten to grade three, in particular those with mild to moderate fine motor difficulties.

The kits can be used with individual children or with small groups of two to four students.

Although designed for elementary students, with a few modifications all the kits EXCEPT Get Ready to Write! can also be used by preschool children.

How Can I Use OT On-Hand Kits?

  • A teacher, assistant or volunteer can lead activities from the OT On-Hand Kits.
  • Activities can be fitted in whenever it is most suitable to the classroom routine.
  • The activities require simple materials that are readily available in most schools and classrooms.
  • Read the teacher card (card 1) in each kit to determine if the kit will be useful for the identified concern. There is also a summary of each kit in the OT On-Hand Manual.
