Echocardiogram is a test done to look at how the valves and the walls of your heart are working. It can also be used to see if there is a collection of fluid in the sack that covers your heart. The test is done by placing a camera on your chest which sends out sound waves to your heart. The sound waves bounce off the valves and walls of your heart and are picked up by the camera which turns the sound waves into pictures.
Sometimes, the pictures from the echocardiogram are not very clear because of the lungs, muscles and bones of the rib cage. The doctor may then decide to do a transesophageal echocardiogram. To do this test, the doctor will put a special camera into your mouth and down into your swallowing tube or esophagus. Since the scope is now closer to your heart, the sound waves that bounce back will make clearer pictures.
How is it Done?
- If you do not have an intravenous, the nurse will put an intravenous catheter in your arm before the test.
- You will not be allowed to eat or drink for at least 6 hours before the test.
- The test will usually be done in the Echocardiogram Lab although it is sometimes done on the nursing ward.
- You will be given some medication before the procedure to help you relax.
- The doctor will freeze the back of your throat before he inserts the camera into your mouth.
- The test will take about 1 to 1½ hours.
What Happens Afterwards?
- A porter will return you to your ward on a stretcher.
- With your throat frozen, there is a chance that you could choke if you eat or drink too soon.
- The nurses will be checking to make sure the freezing has worn off before you drink (it takes about an hour).
- Your doctor will talk to you about the results.
