What is an MIBI Test (Radionuclide imaging)/Cardiac Perfusion Scan?

The MIBI test has been ordered by your Cardiologist to determine if your heart muscle is receiving enough blood flow through the coronary arteries. An exercise tolerance test and rest test are completed over a 2-day period – one test per day – be prepared to spend 2-2 ½ hours each day for these tests to be completed. The sequence of the exercise tolerance test and rest test is not significant.

During both of these tests a small amount of weak radioactive material (also called an isotope) is injected into a vein while you are exercising and/or resting – be prepared to wait approximately 1 hour after the injection before the scan of your heart is performed. The radioactive material is temporarily absorbed by your heart muscle which allows the camera to detect parts of the heart that are not getting enough blood because of narrowed, blocked, or damaged arteries. On the day of the exercise tolerance test you will be walking on a treadmill so wear good walking shoes!

NOTE: For people who are unable to walk on the treadmill another test may be ordered called a Dipyridamole (persantine) MIBI which stimulates exercise, causing an increase in the work of the heart. Under special circumstances, other medications such as Dobutamine or Adenosine may be utilized.

How do I Prepare for the Test?

  • No eating or drinking 4 hours prior to either test – you may have clear water at anytime.
  • No caffeine 12 hours prior to and until test is completed.
No smoking the day of either test.
  • Good walking shoes if possible!! You may or may not feel tired after the exercise part of your test.
  • Notify the staff if any symptoms of chest discomfort/pain occur!
