What is a Holter Monitor?

Why do I need a Holter Monitor?

A holter is a continuous (usually 24 hour) ambulatory monitor of the heart's rhythm. This test allows us to monitor your heart while you are active and while you are at sleep, as there is a need to study your heart in both situations. The Holter will allow your cardiologist to see if you have extra beats or irregularities with your heartbeat.

What happens during the test?

During the test you are hooked up to equipment to continuously monitor your heart rhythm. Tiny electrodes will be securely attached to your chest and connected to a small recorder carried in a shoulder belt. You will also be asked to record activities and symptoms along with the corresponding time in a diary.

Do I have to sleep with this on?

Yes. The monitor will still be attached and working while you sleep. You will be able to set it on a night table beside you or tuck it under the pillow. This should allow you to move around a little at night.

Can I damage the machine in any way?

Yes the monitor is a computer system which has a memory of your heart tracing. Be very careful not to drop it. Also, you cannot allow water to get into it, this means you cannot bath or shower while wearing it. Do not use body oils or lotions before or during the test days.
