Heart Medications

Medications can be a vital part of managing heart disease and they can also help you stay healthy in the future.

Medications may lower blood pressure, relieve chest pain, lower cholesterol, help maintain a steady heartbeat and relieve your heart of some of the work it has to do.  It is important that you try to learn the names of the drugs you take and why you are taking them.

View the patient medication teaching sheets listed below to learn more about the medications you are taking.

Keep a current list of all medications that you take (prescription drugs, nonprescription medication, herbal products, home remedies and vitamins) and medications you cannot take because of an allergic reaction.  Keep this list with you at all times, in your wallet or purse.

Take medications at the same times every day.

Don't stop or change the dosage without your doctor's knowledge. Stopping medication suddenly may be dangerous to your heart.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking a nonprescription medication.

See the "Medication Safety and you" document listed below for more information on general medication safety, poison prevention, traveling safely with medications, adult vaccines, alternative medicines, and information about Viagra, Levitra or Cialis.
