What Are Statins Used For?

These medications help to lower your cholesterol, especially your LDL (low density lipoprotein or "bad cholesterol") cholesterol levels. They work together with a proper diet, to reduce the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver. Your doctor will order blood tests periodically to monitor the safety and efficiancy of your medication.

How Do You Take Statins?

Except for Lovastatin, these medications may be taken either with your evening meal or at bedtime. Taking this medication in the evening is most effective because your liver produces more cholesterol at night. Take Lovastatin (Mevacor) with meals, as food increases the amount of medication absorbed into your bloodstream.

What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?

  • Follow the diet prescribed by your doctor/dietitian. Taking this medication does not reduce the importance of following a healthy diet.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight and follow your exercise program.
  • Limit your alcohol intake because it can increase your triglyceride levels.

Are There Side Effects From Taking Statins?

Contact your doctor if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Persistent diarrhea or stomach upset (most common side effect)
  • Unexplained or severe muscle soreness or weakness
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Although rarely, these medications can affect your liver causing it to produce more enzymes than normal. Your doctor will periodically order a simple blood test to check your liver. This side effect may be temporary and will go away when the medication is stopped. Do not stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor.
