Potassium Chloride (K-Dur®, Slow-K®, Micro-K Extencaps®, Apo®-K)

Other Names: K-Dur®, Slow-K®, Micro-K Extencaps®, Apo®-K

What is Potassium Used For?

Potassium is a mineral that is needed in your body. Potassium supplements are given when your body's storage of potassium is low, or to prevent your potassium level from going too low. Either may occur if you are taking medication that causes your body to lose potassium, such as a water pill.

How Do You Take Potassium?

Swallow each extended-release capsule or tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew. If you have difficulty swallowing K-Dur® tablets whole, they may be broken in half and taken with a glass of water. To avoid stomach upset, take with food.

What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?

  • Try to take your medication at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, do not take 2 doses at the same time.
  • Some salt substitutes contain potassium. Using these while taking a potassium supplement may make your potassium too high. Check with your doctor before using a salt substitute.
  • DO NOT stop taking this medication unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Are There Side Effects From Taking Potassium?

The following side effects may occur:

  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • loose bowel movements

Check with your doctor if they do not go away or are bothersome. If you notice other side effects not listed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

When Should You Call Your Doctor?

Contact your doctor right away if you have:

  • black tarry stools
  • heaviness in your legs or tingling in your hands or feet
