Isosorbide-5-mononitrate (Imdur)

What is Isosorbide-5-mononitrate Used For?

This medication is used to prevent angina (chest pain).

How Do You Take Isosorbide-5-mononitrate?

Take this medication at the same time every day in the morning. It may be taken with or without food, but if it upsets your stomach taking it with food may help. Swallow tablets whole, do not crush or chew tablets. If needed, the tablets may be broken in half along the scored line.

What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?

If you miss a dose:

Take it as soon as you remember if it is within 6 hours of when you were supposed to take it. If it is more than 6 hours when you remember, do not take the missed dose and just take the next dose on time.

Are There Side Effects From Taking Isosorbide-5-mononitrate?

The following side effects may occur:

  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sweating and flushing

Check with your doctor if they do not go away or are bothersome. If you notice other side effects not listed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

When Should You Call Your Doctor?

Tell your doctor right away if you have:

  • Throbbing, severe or ongoing headache
  • Confusion, fever or difficulty seeing
  • Itching, hives, swelling of the face/hands
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe or ongoing dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
  • Slow heartbeat or increased chest pain

What Can You Do To Help?

The most common side effect with Isosorbide-5-mononitrate is headache. It often occurs when you first start taking this medication but usually goes away after a few days. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about pain relievers to use for your headache. If you get a very bad or prolonged headache be sure to tell your doctor.
