What is Isosorbide Dinitrate Used For?

This medication is used to help prevent chest pain (angina).

How Do You Take Isosorbide Dinitrate?

Take this medication according to your prescription label. It is best to take this medicine on an empty stomach, 1-2 hours before meals.

What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?

  • Swallow the SR (sustained release) tablet whole. Do not break, crush or chew it.
  • Store the medicine at room temperature in a closed container, away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
  • If you miss a dose, do not take 2 doses at the same time.
  • It is recommended to avoid alcohol while on this medication because it may cause dizziness and fainting.

Are There Side Effects From Taking Isosorbide Dinitrate?

The following side effects may occur:

  • Persistent headache
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating, facial flushing

Check with your doctor if they do not go away or are bothersome. If you notice other side effects not listed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

When Should You Call Your Doctor?

Tell your doctor right away if you have:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Severe or ongoing dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
  • Throbbing, severe, or ongoing headache, confusion or trouble seeing
  • Increased chest pain
