What is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?
This medicine is used to lower blood pressure and/or help the body get rid of excess fluids. It is sometimes referred to as a "water pill".
How Do You Take Hydrochlorothiazide?
Take this medicine at the same time each day, exactly as your doctor and pharmacist tell you to. Because hydrochlorothiazide will increase your need to urinate (pass water), it is recommended that you take it first thing in the morning to avoid unnecessary trips to the bathroom at night.
What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?
If you miss a dose:
Take it as soon as you can but if it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Your doctor may want to monitor your potassium and sodium levels while you take this medicine because hydrochlorothiazide can cause your body to lose potassium and sodium.
Are There Side Effects From Taking Hydrochlorothiazide?
The following side effects may occur:
- Dizziness, headache
- Nausea, vomiting, cramping
When Should You Call Your Doctor?
Call your doctor right away if you have:
- Dry mouth
- Excessive thirst
- Weakness
- Drowsiness
- Muscle pain or cramps
What Can You Do To Help?
Tell all healthcare professionals that you are on this medicine. Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using other blood pressure medicines, anti-inflammatory medicines, or if you are a diabetic.
