What is Gemfibrozil Used For?
Gemfibrozil reduces your triglycerides, increases your HDL ("good" cholesterol), and to a smaller extent, reduces your LDL ("bad" cholesterol). This medication must be used in combination with a low fat, low cholesterol diet in order to be most effective. Your doctor will monitor the effectiveness of this medication by taking blood tests to measure your cholesterol levels periodically.
How Do You Take Gemfibrozil?
Gemfibrozil should be taken twice daily, once in the morning, 30 minutes before breakfast and once in the evening, about 30 minutes before supper.
What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?
- Follow a low fat, low cholesterol diet. Taking this medication does not reduce the importance of following a healthy diet.
- Maintain healthy body weight and follow your exercise program.
- Limit your alcohol intake because it can increase your triglyceride levels.
- If you take Coumadin (warfarin), you may need to have your blood tested more frequently and/or the dose of Coumadin may need to be reduced when you start taking Gemfibrozil.
Are There Side Effects From Taking Gemfibrozil?
Contact your doctor if any of the following symptoms persist:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Stomach pain or heartburn
- Constipation or diarrhea
