What is Fenofibrate Used For?
Fenofibrate helps to reduce your triglycerides, increase your HDL ("good" cholesterol), and to a smaller extent, reduce your LDL ("bad" cholesterol). This medication must be used in combination with a low fat, low cholesterol diet in order to be most effective. Your doctor will monitor the effectiveness of this medication by taking blood tests which measure your cholesterol levels periodically.
How Do You Take Fenofibrate?
Fenofibrate is taken once daily, with your evening meal. Taking fenofibrate with food increases the amount of medication that reaches your bloodstream.
What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?
- Follow a low fat, low cholesterol diet. Taking this medication does not reduce the importance of following a healthy diet.
- Maintain healthy body weight and follow your exercise program.
- Limit your alcohol intake because it can increase your triglyceride levels.
- If you take Coumadin (warfarin), you may need to have your blood tested more frequently and/or the dose of Coumadin may need to be reduced when you start taking fenofibrate.
Are There Side Effects From Taking Fenofibrate?
Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Stomach pain
- Constipation or diarrhea
