What is Diltiazem Used For?
Diltiazem is used to treat angina and high blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. This decreases the pressure your heart must pump against, reducing the workload of your heart and therefore preventing angina. Diltiazem also slows the heart rate and can be used to control fast heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation.
How Do You Take Diltiazem?
Take this medication according to your prescription label. Diltiazem may be taken with or without food.
What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?
If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is only a few hours until it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular dosing times. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Are There Side Effects From Taking Diltiazem?
Contact your doctor if you develop the following symptoms:
- Dizziness or light headedness
- Unusual tiredness or weakness
- Nausea
Other minor side effects include headache and flushing. These do not usually require medical attention. If these symptoms persist or become bothersome, contact your doctor.
