Clopidogrel (Plavix)

Other Names: Plavix

What is Clopidogrel Used For?

Clopidogrel decreases the stickiness of a certain component of your blood cells called platelets. This helps prevent the formation of blood clots. Clopidogrel is used in combination with Aspirin after an angioplasty with a stent to help prevent blood from clotting on the stent.

How Do You Take Clopidogrel?

Clopidogrel may be taken with or without food. Taking clopidogrel with food may decrease the chance of stomach upset.

What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?

If you take Aspirin, DO NOT stop taking it while on Clopidogrel unless your doctor tells you to.

Take this medication once daily as directed by your doctor. If you have had a stent placed in your heart, you will need to take this medication for 2 - 4 weeks. After that time, the stent site has "healed" and you no longer require the medication. Not that sometimes your doctor may ask you to continue taking Clopidogrel beyond the 2 - 4 week period, but they will inform you if they want you to do so.

Are There Side Effects From Taking Clopidogrel?

Occasional side effects reported with Clopidogrel include:

  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Nausea
  • Rash and/or itching

When Should You Call Your Doctor?

If you have any unusual bleeding such as unexplained nosebleeds or blood in your urine or bowel movements, tell your doctor. Some side effects that usually do not need medical attention are mild abdominal or stomach pain, gas or nausea. These effects may go away during treatment as the body adjusts to the medicine. If these continue or become bothersome, tell your doctor.

What Can You Do To Help?

Because Clopidogrel increases the chance of bleeding, inform all medical doctors, dentists and pharmacists that you are taking this medication.
