What Are Beta-Blockers Used For?

Beta-blockers make it easier for the heart to pump by lowering blood pressure and heart rate. They are used to treat several conditions including angina, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. They are also prescribed after a heart attack to reduce the chance of having another heart attack. Research studies have shown that beta-blockers can prolong life in people who have had a heart attack.

How Do You Take Beta-Blockers?

Take this medication according to your prescription label. You may take it with food or on an empty stomach. Taking it with food may help if the medication upsets your stomach.

What Special Instructions Do You Need To Know?

  • Try not to miss any doses. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time.
  • DO NOT stop taking this medication unless your doctor tell you to. Your condition may worsen if you stop taking your beta-blocker abruptly.
  • If you are diabetic, be aware that beta-blockers may mask some of the signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) such as racing heart and shakiness. Another sign of low blood sugar, increased sweating, is not affected by these medications. You may need to monitor your blood sugars more closely.
  • The doctor will check your blood pressure and heart rate to see how this drug is working for you.

Are There Side Effects From Taking Beta-Blockers?

Contact your doctor if you develop the following side effects:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fatigue
  • Coldness or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Decrease or loss of sexual functioning
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing (less likely with Acebutolol or Bisoprolol)
  • Increased dreaming (does not require medical attention)
