As Canada's largest academic health region, Alberta Health Services - Capital Health in Edmonton, Alberta has an international reputation for advances in providing comprehensive health services to over one million residents. 

Alberta Health Services - VisitorsCapital Health is the major referral centre for northern and central Alberta, and western and northern Canada for a number of specialized services and complex care. 

With the University of Alberta and other post-secondary institutions, Alberta Health Services - Capital Health educates and trains health professionals and supports leading research in the broad, health sciences field.

The Visitors Centre is dedicated to facilitating learning opportunities for health organizations who want to visit and learn about Alberta Health Services - Capital Health. The Visitors Centre provides:

  • a single point of entry for all visitors wanting to learn more about Alberta Health Services - Capital Health;
  • information about the range of possible learning experiences; and
  • overall planning, management and hosting of visits to Alberta Health Services - Capital Health.

Administrative fees may be charged to groups visiting Alberta Health Services - Capital Health.  The fee structure is dependent on the nature and complexity of the visit arrangements.

Complex and specialized health services:Shaking hands

  • Stollery Children's Hospital – a full-service pediatric hospital and a leading centre for complex care.  Its formal relationship with the University of Alberta creates innovative education and research opportunities.
  • Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute – a world class centre of excellence in pediatric and adult heart disease prevention, treatment, research and education. 
  • Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital – the largest freestanding, comprehensive, tertiary rehabilitation centre in North America.  This facility has developed an international reputation for excellence in key areas of complex rehabilitation and specialized geriatrics.
  • Transplantation – Alberta Health Services - Capital Health is home to one of Canada's leading transplant programs and provides specialized services to patients requiring organ and tissue transplants.  Islet transplantation is an innovation developed in the region and known internationally as the Edmonton Protocol.  Alberta Health Services - Capital Health is the only centre for clinical islet transplants in Canada.

Primary and Community Care:

  • Weight Wise – a comprehensive weight management program to help children and adults develop healthy weights and improve their overall health.
  • Regional Diabetes Program – a program that ensures consistency in care, based on best practices and managing the wait list throughout the region to meet increasing demand for services.  Alberta Health Services - Capital Health identifies approximately 500 new cases of diabetes each month.
  • Primary Care Networks – formal arrangement between groups of family physicians, Alberta Health Services - Capital Health and Alberta Health & Wellness.  Each network is unique and has the flexibility to develop programs and provide services that work to meet local needs.  A multidisciplinary team works closely within the network to provide primary care services to a group of patients. 
  • Regional Palliative Care Program – a community-based program of care offering palliative home care, hospices, tertiary units and consultation services in acute care and the community.
  • Health Link Alberta – a 24/7 in-bound contact centre.  One phone number provides system-wide access to a registered nurse who provides symptom based triage and information about Alberta Health Services - Capital Health services, a Pharmacist Line with real-time access to a pharmacist during evening hours and program registration such as Prenatal and Diabetes Education Classes. 

Innovative technology:

  • MeetingeCLINICIAN – a region-wide electronic scheduling and electronic medical record information system.  Developed by clinicians, eCLINICIAN is an integrated system for ambulatory care services ensuring the right care providers have the right patient information at the right time.
  • Telehealth – an extensive program using information and communications technology to deliver health services, expertise and information to residents and health teams across Central and Northern Alberta, and beyond.
  • Patient Simulation – a safe environment for health professionals to practice procedures and engage in complex scenarios, and for multidisciplinary teams to gain experience in managing emergencies or unexpected events.
