Primary Care

Primary health care is the point at which a person enters the health care system and receives services that meet most of their everyday health care needs. It's a cornerstone of health reform and a priority for our region.

Alberta Health Services - Edmonton and Area has developed a roadmap to 2006 on what it will achieve in the area of Primary Health Care.  The region has already begun to launch a series of initiatives that focus on some of the unique needs of people who live in our urban and rural communities.  To move forward, Alberta Health Services - Edmonton and Area is committed to:

  • Maintain strong linkages with all its partners in delivering Primary Health Care, especially the physicians in our region, but also municipal, provincial and federal governments, associations, post-secondary institutions and members of the community.
  • Build Local Primary Care Initiatives throughout its region in both rural and urban communities. These initiatives will be designed to meet the health needs of the residents they serve.
  • Work with all physicians and health care providers in this region to ensure that clinicians and AHS - CH jointly build a strong primary health care system.
  • Integrate Health Link Alberta and the Electronic Health Record as part of all Primary Health Care initiatives.  These services will help ensure people receive accessible health care that enhances the quality and safety of care delivered.
