Laboratory Medicine in Capital Health provides a range of diagnostic, therapeutic and environmental monitoring services. Laboratory teams strive to provide the highest quality services for patient care. Efficient, accurate laboratory testing services are coupled with consultative services for physicians.
The region offers a unique regional lab service. The Lab at the University Hospital offers a full range of services on site, including diagnostic testing, referral testing, clinical trials, teaching and research.
Lab services for other hospitals in the region are provided by Dynacare Kasper Medical Laboratories (DKML). These hospitals are served with "rapid response labs" on site, which provide essential lab tests on an immediate (STAT) basis. Remaining tests are provided through an off-site, full service "base lab" which also supports services to lab collection sites in the community.
The University laboratory features a unique "robotic" laboratory sample processing system. This automation speeds up processing time while contributing to safe and efficient processing of large volume laboratory tests.
Lab results within Capital Health can be accessed by physicians and other authorized health providers through netCare, which is Capital Health's electronic health record, or through the electronic Physician Office System Program. By using either available technology, the Lab system in Capital Health is able to provide timely information, increase efficiency and improve patient care.
